The Nuclear Fuel Cycle Royal Commission was established in 2015 to undertake an independent, non-agenda driven, comprehensive investigation into South Australia’s potential engagement in the nuclear fuel cycle. Of the 4 nuclear fuel cycle activities, the disposal/storage of international nuclear and radioactive waste was identified as viable and with the potential to deliver economic benefits to the South Australian community. Given the historically controversial nature of the subject matter, sufficient support (ie ‘permission’) on the part of the broader South Australian community is essential before the Government will proceed to the legislative, planning and implementation phases. To ensure proper consideration, the SA Government embarked on a large awareness campaign and a thorough community consultation program. The campaign and program is charged with providing forums where the South Australiian public can both learn and contribute to the debate as informed citizens as this was one of the biggest initiatives in our state’s history.
